Where is Hip Hop this season?

A.M.R is working on hiring a Professional Hip Hop Instructor to run weekly classes/regular programs. We greatly apologize to anyone this lets down. We are actively looking for a suitable instructor, with every intention of adding it back in, ASAP.

Why must Acrodance be accompanied with a Ballet, Tap or Jazz class? *Preschool Excluded

Acrodance was created to supplement other styles of Dance, not replace them. The majority of Acrodance class is spent on strength, flexibility and skills. We believe in the benefits of blending Dance with Limbering, Tumbling and Balance. Priority will always be given to dancers first.

What’s the difference between Gymnastics and Acro?

Here is a great article from Acro Dance Teachers Association (ADTA) on the difference between Gymnastics and Acro!

Joining competitive dance requires approval from Miss Ali, why is this?

Competitive dance requires a larger commitment from the students and families. Competitive dancers need to attend more classes and practice regularly at home. The expectations of class, teamwork and performance are larger.

We want to invest in our competitive students long term, since dance is a skill developed through progressive training, we want to ensure we can support competitive dancers to see their skills advance and hard work pay off. Like any team sport, in order to succeed, it requires team attendance and continual effort from each member.

How many competitions do we do?

Our studio participates in 3-4 different festivals around Alberta. We try to stick within a 2hour travel limit, being mindful of our families life outside of the studio. We want to give our students taste of the competitive world, while maintaining our small town balanced lifestyle.

We often consider ourselves the underdogs but love being a part of the performance scene and seeing other dancers perform.

What is Barre?

Barre is an exciting mix of moves inspired by Ballet, Pilates & light Cardio – designed to target and tone, head to toe. With Miss Courtney’s charismatic attitude and simple but effective sequences, our classes are guaranteed to make you sweat with a smile.

What will I need?

We recommend bare feet, stretchy exercise attire, a water bottle and hair back. Bare feet or pilates/yoga socks (grip). Bring own yoga mat if you have one. Other equipment such as barre, yoga blocks, 1-5lb dumbbells, pilates balls and resistance bands are provided by the studio (will be cleaned after all sessions) but participants are also welcomed to bring their own, if you have.

I feel inexperienced (or too advanced). Is this class right for me?

Barre is actually incredibly easy to modify, or advance. Like most physical activities, participants can choose how easy or hard to perform. We encourage open communication during class with all students if looking for more or less. We promote a safe class environment for everyone to be their best.

Easy ways to modify or advance:

  • Perform the moves without dumbbell weights, or increased weight

  • Remove or add ankle weights

  • Modify core work: lower back support with hands under pelvis, or yoga block under head

  • Advance core work: hands behind head, shoulders elevated, increase range of motion

  • Modify any cardio: Decrease range of movements – step touches vs. plyometrics (jumping)

  • Advance any cardio: Increase speed or range of motion
